Midpoint Music Festival 2015

This is always the sequence of emotions I experience with the MPMF line-up. Every. Year. EVERY. STINKING. YEAR. SINCE 2005.

  1. I am disappointed because I am thinking of all the indie acts that are on tour that weren’t booked.
  2. I am slightly disturbed by how few of the bands I recognize considering how much indie rock I listen to.
  3. I wonder if the fest has gotten smaller. (This has been true some years. At some point the fest had close to 300 bands. Last year the fest had just under 150. This year it’s just over 100. Net, this is a year where the fest got smaller.)
  4. I start listening.
  5. I notice a few things I like.
  6. I listen A LOT.
  7. I realize that I like most of the acts.
  8. I listen even more.
  9. I start to get excited to see a lot of this live.
  10. I literally listen to the MPMF playlist for weeks on end
  11. I notice the variety of music represented in the line-up.
  12. I start to love a bunch of the acts.
  13. I can’t wait for the fest.
  14. I am certain the fest will be spectacular. (This typically happens in early September.)

I am on step 14, and I haven’t written a single blog entry about what I am going to see. In my defense, I did just move across the country. So, it’s not like I was just playing video games and time got away from me.

I have a little less than three weeks until MPMF15 kicks off. My goal is to blog daily from now until then about what I’m pumped about seeing. And go!

Here’s the Spotify playlist that I made for MPMF15. Have a listen if you wish.

You wanna see past MPMF pictures and such? I have you covered.

Elk Creek at MOTR, also Seattle

I saw Elk Creek play at MOTR on Friday night. Some late in the set sound issues aside, they sounded good. I think they were short a lead guitarist, so I am excited to check them out again with a full band.

Bobby Bare Jr. played afterward. Man. He was really spectacular. Three piece bands have it tough. There simply aren’t enough bodies on stage to create layers of sounds to keep the audience interested. Bobby Bare Jr. used all the tools as his disposal including some really dynamic pedals as well as his snapping fingers and rangy voice. He was really great to watch. Seriously, go seem him if you can. He makes me think Nashville still has a soul.

Bunbury 2015 Friday Pictures

After day one, I had over seven hundred pictures to sift through. Here’s a sampling of what I got. Admittedly, my editing was a bit slapdash. Here’s the highlights of what happened.

Father John Misty was shockingly great to watch. Bleachers and Matt & Kim couldn’t have been more fun. I missed the meet-up to go up front for Bleachers, so I had to make do with not so great crowd shots for their show. I had a little regret that I was running around taking pictures for their sets, because I really wanted to dance my pants off. I had my very expensive gear out when it started to rain in the second song of Tame Impala’s set. I was disappointed to leave them and find cover for my gear. The Black Keys sounded great, as they have every time I have seen them.

Bunbury 2015 Must See: Atmosphere

I hate the phrase, “get up in your guts.” My physical revulsion upon encountering that phrase makes the hair in the back of my neck stand on end. I struggle to keep my face from a grimace.

Get up in your guts where among the first lyrics I heard from Atmosphere. My first thought was, “This does not bode well.” There are benefits to starting out in the basement, and persistence can pay out.

After several more songs, I liked the hooks. I liked the words. Now, I am pretty thrilled to see these guys. Atmosphere plays at Bunbury on Sunday at 6pm.

Check Atmosphere out here.

Bunbury 2015 Must See – Matt and Kim

There are a number of ways I connect with music, and specifically live performances. Sometimes I connect to the biting truth of melancholy lyrics. Sometimes I connect with the powerful energy that the feel of the music gives off. And sometimes, it’s just big dumb fun to listen to; think outrageous 80’s hits here. As much as I love my pensive Death Cab for Cutie lyrics, I also can’t help cranking up “Beat It” when it comes on the radio. It’s impossible to frown and listen to that sweet, sweet guitar lick.

Matt and Kim qualify as big dumb fun. This is gonna be the labrador retriever of Bunbury performances. Matt and Kim play Friday at 645 at Bunbury 2015.

Bunbury 2015 Must See: Jamestown Revival

Well this is just lovely. I want to be in that tent. I want to be on that shore.

True story, these guys play 630 to 715 on Saturday at Bunbury 2015. A time that completely overlaps with The Decemberists. As much as I enjoy this, in the battle between Jamestown Revival and The Decemberists, The Decemberists are clear front runners. If for some reason that show doesn’t grab me, Jamestown Revival it is.

And while I am thinking about it, the scheduling is one of the things that I don’t appreciate about Bunbury 2015. Matt & Kim have zero schedule competition, while Walk the Moon and Royal Blood overlap completely. Lucky for me, I’ve seen Walk the Moon numerous times, so I feel ok about putting that time to Royal Blood.

I also suspect that concentrating the entire Bunbury audience at one stage for in multiple time-slots is going to drive the feeling of the fest toward over-crowding. In previous years, only the headliners (the last show of each day) had no competition. For those final shows, the crowds were pretty unreasonable. I am curious to see how this works out.

Bunbury 2015 Must See: The Avett Brothers

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about The Avett Brothers? Nothing really. But if you are unfamiliar with them Pitchfork has a really nice review of their 2012 album. That ought to tell you what you need to know.

Bunbury will be my first time seeing them, and I am really excited. If you haven’t checked out Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield’s cover of “Between the Bars” you really should. And oh look, I put it here for you. They did a whole album of Elliott Smith covers, and they are just gorgeous. Elliott Smith, I miss you so much. Not gonna lie, I have a secret hope they cover Elliott Smith at the show as unlikely as that is. And my love of Elliott Smith just hijacked this post. Sorry. Not Sorry.

Avett Brothers play at 945 at Bunbury 2015.

Bunbury 2015 Must See: Catfish and the Bottlemen

This video has one of the nicest depictions of a mental hospital I have ever seen. By nice, I mean beautiful and completely unrealistic. I won’t hold that against them. This song has some good hooks, and the rest of their catalog sounds solid.

I failed to start my Bunbury research early enough. One of the consequences of that is that I can’t give as much time to each band that I take an immediate liking to. I suspect that with more time to sit with these guys, they would grow in me. I would have a deeper connection than my current flirtation. Hopefully, when I see them, their performance will help reign me in. They play at Bunbury 2015 at 5 on Friday.

Bunbury 2015 Must See: Twenty One Pilots

This band isn’t exactly in my wheelhouse. But when I saw them at Bunbury a couple of years back their performance was really entertaining. When they took the stage the pianist launched off the top of his upright piano. The piano thudded to the stage; stage hands scurried to the rescue. But Twenty One Pilots didn’t miss a beat. Later in the show the drummer passed a platform to the crowd and set-up his kit there and played. Regardless of how you feel about the music, you will be entertained.
